We’re very excited to announce a new street market in Clapham on Venn St. It’s a great location just a minute’s walk from both Clapham Common and the tube station.

The first market is the last weekend in November. The market will be run from Friday to Sunday on the last weekend of each month. Friday and Saturday will be all about produce, with Sunday being a flower market. Hot food will be available all weekend. Our long-term aim is for the market to be weekly. This will start in spring 2010.

We’re big fans of markets as they are vibrant street shows, unique to their locations and the communities they serve – even more so when compared to the homogeneous supermarket aisles. They encourage local food production, better reflect the seasonal nature of food, reduce food miles and packaging and support the local economy. Markets help increase the diversity of food on offer and better provide for different ethnic communities. Show your support by shopping at the market!

The market will aim to:

  • have a strong focus on seasonal produce with dedicated pitches
  • represent and support local producers and encourage local food production
  • provide a genuine alternative to the supermarket with a full range of affordable produce
  • work with existing local businesses
  • minimise waste and packaging and encourage re-use and recycling
  • offer support to both new and existing traders
  • sell only free-range meat and sustainably sourced fish and seafood

The primary aim of the market is to provide a range of take-home produce. However there will also be a limited number of pitches available for traders offering hot food and drink that can be consumed at the market.
